Emery Says He Wanted Fabinho at Arsenal

Unai Emery has admitted he wanted to bring Fabinho to Arsenal before the Brazil international joined Liverpool.

The Gunners' head coach is a huge fan of the midfielder and tried to lure him from Monaco to Paris Saint-Germain while he was in charge at the Parc des Princes.

The move never materialised, however, but Emery maintained his interest and has now revealed that the 25-year-old was on his list of targets when he first arrived at the Emirates and sat down with former chief executive Ivan Gazidis in the summer of 2018.

A deal proved impossible, with Arsenal ultimately signing Lucas Torreira from Sampdoria, while Fabinho ended up at Anfield in a deal that cost £40 million ($51.5m).

“Pepe needs time to adapt to the Premier League,” said Emery. “For example, in France, I loved Fabinho a lot. He was at Monaco and I wanted to sign him for PSG.

“When I arrived here [at Arsenal], his name was on the table to try to sign him, but he signed for Liverpool.

“The first six months he didn’t play, it was adaptation. But now he is amazing and I want the same with Pepe.”

Lampard Equals 30-Year Away Win Record

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has continued a stellar start to his first season at the helm of the club to equal a record set 30 years ago. Chelsea overcame Watford 2-1 on Saturday thanks to goals by Tammy Abraham and Christian Pulisic to secure their seventh consecutive away win, tying the mark set by Bobby Campbell’s team in 1989. A controversial penalty awarded for a foul on Gerard Deulofeu by VAR, and converted by the same player, led to a tense final fifteen minutes but the London club saw the game out, moving ahead of Leicester, who play Crystal Palace on Sunday, into third place.

Lionel Messi had put the visitors ahead with a 38th-minute penalty following Jorge Miramon's foul on Nelson Semedo. Jose Campana levelled for Levante after 60 minutes, before Borja Mayoral completed the turnaround two minutes later and Nemanja Radoja added a third. The video assistant referee then denied Messi as his side failed to respond. The Argentine appeared to have scored an excellent solo goal after a determined run, but Antoine Griezmann had strayed offside in the build-up.
